The story of boats is as old as the human civilization. There’s reference of a boat “Noah"s ark” in the Bible. Noah"s ark was the boat built by the Biblical character Noah to save his family and animals from the Flood. Gondolas were the traditionally used boats in Venice.

Today, a boat is considered as one of the major tools of watercraft. A boat is a small vessel for traveling on water. It comprises of one or more buoyancy structures called hulls, and some system of propulsion such as a screw, oars, paddles, a setting pole, a sail, paddlewheels or a water jet.

The front of a boat is called the bow or prow and the rear of the boat is called the stern. The right side is starboard and the left side is port. The boat toilet is called the ‘heads’.

A boat with a housing compartment is called a houseboat or barge. A pontoon boat is a flat-bottomed boat that serves as a dock or as a floating structure to support a bridge. The pontoon boat is also known as a party boat. It is constructed of round tubes (called sponsons) that are attached to the outside, bottom edge of a large flat deck. It has a safety railing that surrounds the deck from all sides. The helm station is placed either in the middle of the deck or off to one side. Pontoon boats may be furnished with lawn furniture, and some deluxe pontoon boats may have upholstered seating, a dinette table, a roof, a cooler, and maybe even a head (toilet).

A recreational boat is used for water sporting activities or other recreational purposes.

Boat Maintenance:

People fond of water sports or water adventures keep their own boats. Taking good care of one’s boat is very important. Good care and maintenance enhances the life of a boat and saves a lot of money also.

The following are some boat care tips:

• The boat engine should be flushed each time after it’s used in salt water.
• The underneath of the boat should be washed to prevent salt buildup.
• The entire boat should be washed using soap and water, after every single use.
• A non-skid cleaner should be used to scrub the deck.
• The boat should be completely dried after washing.
• The boat should be covered properly with a boat cover.
• The boat should be waxed every few months to protect the finish from stains and UV damage.
• Boat parts and accessories should be checked regularly, and defective parts should be replaced.

A boat cover is a very important accessory. When your boat is not in use, a cover will keep it protected from harsh weather and wearing. People use various boat covers and boat tops to protect their boats. Custom boat covers, bimini tops and canvas boat covers are some quite commonly used covers.

Paul MacIver writes articles on a variety of topics. To read more about boats, boat covers and other boating accessories, visit the Boat Covers and Accessories website. You may freely reprint this article as long as this resource box is included and all links are intact.

Sometimes known as a party boat, the pontoon boat has a hull constructed of round tubes called sponsons. They are attached to the outside bottom edge of a large flat deck. For personal safety, a safety railing surrounds the deck. You will find the helm station is placed to one side or in the middle of the deck. Of course, and in the more economical models you will find lawn furniture for seating. With more deluxe models, you will find built-in upholstered seating, a roof, a built-in cooler, a dining table, and maybe even a toilet. This style of boat is very stable and has the capacity to hold 6 to 12 people. Unlike most power boats out there, this type of craft is very flat.

The pontoon boat is trailer-able, but you will need a special trailer to haul it as it ranges in size from 16 to 22 feet in length. Power plants differ, but most are powered by with either two or four-stroke outboard gasoline engines between 10 and 100 hp. The sponsons are constructed of two or three welded, aluminum tubes that are tapered at the forward ends that assist with movement and speed. You"ll find pontoon tubes are made of wood, aluminum or fiberglass. They are attached to the rigid deck platform by means of an aluminum framing apparatus.

To keep both out weather it is a good idea to put a canopy over the deck, especially if you have a large party! You can explore beautiful lakes and take your friends and family out on an afternoon cruise, on your favorite lake, rivers or other protected waters. These boats are stable and offer an excellent platform for still fishing. You"re advised to not take your pontoon boat out on the sea, as large bodies of water with large waves do not agree with pontoon boats!

So You Think You Know What a Trawler is! PDF Print E-mail

Trawlers, sometimes referred to as commercial fishing boats, receive their name because of their similarity and looks to a commercial fishing vessel that uses trawling as a fishing method. One distinguishing feature about a true, cruising trawler is the raised pilothouse that has a standup engine and mechanical room under the salon, and a displacement hull. Combined with a single engine that usually has a large fuel capacity, this boat is tremendous for long range cruising and has been proven over the years to be very seaworthy. It will sleep from 2 to 8 people for extended periods of time with the sleeping spaces located under the pilothouse and forward under the bow.

This boat can be expensive new, ranging in price from $150,000 to a million US dollars. Used vessels range from $50,000 and up. Most trawlers are powered with a single, diesel engine and have a small generator/get home engine in case of failure. In the event of grounding it has a protective skeg to protect the drive system and rudder, and also an inboard drive. With the advent of technology, there are many trawler look-alikes" out there that have twin engines with semi-displacement hulls and are capable of doing 25-plus knots. The jury is still out as to whether these hybrids can actually claim to be trawlers. Generally, trawlers are 80 to 250 hp.

A trawler can range from 32 to over 70 feet and will be made from steel, fiberglass, wood or aluminum materials. It comes complete with a displacement hull that has a long keel, and a skew that is capable of speeds around 10 knots, depending on its length. This type of boat is not trailer- able, but is a great live-aboard boat and is ideal for long-range economical cruising. Remember that this type of boat is not a speedboat, and you"ll find that only a sailboat is slower.
